1. a batter cake with a pattern of deep indentations on each side, formed by the gridlike design on each of the two hinged parts of the metal appliance (waffle iron) in which the cake is baked.

Buttermilk Syrup

     1/2 c. butter (1 cube)
     1 cup sugar
     1 cup buttermilk {or 1 c. milk & 1 TBSP lemon juice}
     1 TBSP vanilla
     1 TBSP corn syrup
     1/2 tsp. baking soda

I made the syrup easy. Just put all of the ingredients in a saucepan minus the baking soda and heat to almost a boil.

Add the baking soda & remove from heat.
I added a half a teaspoon of salt to mine.

For the waffles:

     1 1/4 cup flour
     2 TBSP cornstarch
     1 tsp baking powder
     1/4 tsp salt
     2 TBSP sugar
     2 eggs
     2 TBSP melted butter
     1 cup buttermilk
     1 TBSP vanilla extract
     1 TBSP grated orange zest
     1 TBSP fresh squeezed orange juice (zest & juice require 1 medium orange)

~makes 4 large waffles

Zest your orange.

Put all of the dry ingredients in a bowl and whisk together together. I probably used half a teaspoon of salt instead of the 1/4 tsp the recipe called for.

Melt 2 TBSP of butter. Whisk together eggs, vanilla, orange zest, buttermilk, orange juice & melted butter.

Add to dry ingredients. Whisk together.

If batter seems too thick (mine was) add a little more buttermilk and orange juice.

Heat waffle iron.

When ready use your favorite large spoon & spoon batter into waffle iron. Spread the batter around a little.

That's it! When it's ready just add that tasty Buttermilk syrup & enjoy.
Holy yum! These are so good I ate the first one when it wasn't lunch time or breakfast! No regrets!
I will be serving these to my in­laws for supper tonight along w/ the hash brown egg nests!
