Crab Rangoon Baby!
My inspiration: Damn Delicious
I'm on a crab kick right now. It tastes so good in the summer. These are tasty little dumplings fried to crispy perfection.
Sunflower oil for frying, Canola also works. Just make sure it's a mild oil.
1 1/2 tsp sesame oil for frying, optional
5 oz Imitation crab meat or real if your prefer, this doesn't have to be exact. I didn't measure.
4 oz cream cheese, soft
1 garlic clove, minced
2 chives or 1 green onion, chopped
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Salt & Pepper to taste
24 wonton wrappers
Thai Sweet Chili Sauce for dipping
Prepare a baking sheet or pizza pan for your wontons. Cover half in paper towels and leave the other half for the uncooked wontons.
Place your softened cream cheese in a bowl. Mince your chives and add to bowl. Mince your garlic and add to bowl. Chop your crab meat smallish and add to bowl. If you are using real crab meat it may already be flaked.
Add the worcestershire sauce salt and pepper. Mix together well.
Get a tiny dish of water for sealing your wontons. On a cutting board other surface place one wonton in a diamond shape. Now dip your finger in the water and run it along 2 edges of your wonton. Place one teaspoon of the filling in the center of the wonton.
Fold over and seal edges by gently pressing them together.
Repeat this process until all the filling is gone.
You can save the leftover wontons for another use or cut them in strips and fry them. They are delicious on Chinese chicken salad.
Add some oil, maybe half an inch, to a small cast iron skillet or other small skillet. Add 1 1/2 tsp of sesame oil. This gives it a nice flavor. Turn on med to med low heat and let the oil get hot. I have a commercial stove so I put my fairly low. Let the oil heat for a few minutes.
Place one wonton in the oil and cook for 1-2 minutes. Flip halfway through with tongs. If it gets really dark then turn your oil down.
Once your oil is regulated fry the wontons a few at time until they are done. If you are using your leftover wontons for strips them fry them now also.
Get out your sweet chili sauce cuz it's time to eat!
That's it. They are really quick and oh so delightful. Crispy, sweet, spicy and savory! The perfect appetizer. I have also served them with a delicious Thai Curry soup. Yum!
